CASACUNA Residency
Mexico City, MX. March-June 2023
CASACUNA is an educational project carried out since 2017, by
Ruta del CASTOR. The program uses contemporary art as a
pedagogical tool and consists of research with workshops and
activities to enrich links between cultural agents and the community
of the Casa Cuna La Paz orphanage. With the aim of promoting
emotional, creative skills and healthy affective bonds for the girls and
boys and the caretakers of this community.
Support for the Casa Cuna La Paz community focuses on socialization,
the expression of emotions and self-esteem. Through a process of
knowledge about the needs and characteristics of this particular
community, the program consists of developing a training laboratory
together with invited artists with the intention of generating new
stimulating experiences for their creativity and imagination, promoting
a space for socialization focused on the development of: limits and
containment, expression of emotions free from violence, and formation
of self-esteem that allows taking care of yourself and others.
For our residency we focused on the following objectives:
Positively stimulating the senses through the use of fabrics. The
different textures, colors and patterns of the fabrics create an enriching
tactile and visual experience for the participants. Using textiles to play,
create shapes and textures, and give life to their ideas while respecting
their creative process.
Providing spaces of recognition and admiration for their own ideas and
achievements. During the residency they were given opportunities to
share and present their projects to the group. Thus, receiving positive
feedback, praise and appreciation for their effort and creativity,
fostering self-esteem, sense of accomplishment and self-confidence,
thus strengthening their personal and emotional development.

The first activity centered around an artifact that represented the sun.
The children created alien masks and played against the galaxy backdrop.
They invented their own characters and presented them to their peers.
We used left over fabrics and recycled materials from our studio.
