Manta de Cielo
Mexico City, MX. May 2022
Manta de cielo is a portable sculpture, a flexible space, a tent that
provides shade. The textile piece was created with the intention of
hosting gatherings, events and celebrations underneath it. The eight
parts that make the piece are tied together with knots, keeping the
composition simple yet versatile, so that the tent transforms itself by
adapting to the space where it is installed.
On the textile surface we created a map of the symbols that constitute
our pictorial language. A synthesis of our shapes and colors. Manta
de cielo refers both to the fabric of the universe and the simple
cotton cloth that we use in Mexico as a kitchen rag, both grandiose
and ordinary. The fabric transforms the space where it’s installed
and filters the light to turn it a bright shade of pink, it creates and
atmosphere that transforms everything inside it.
Making the most of the portable and flexible qualities of textile, we
want to see this piece travel, and for multiple and different events to
happen inside it.
The first gathering underneath Manta de Cielo took place at JO-HS
Mexico City on May 1st 2022. The event was done in collaboration
with Elisabeth Johs and Viviana Reyes.
The second gathering took place at Laguna Gloria in Austin, USA on
May 18th 2023. Hosted by The Contemporary Austin, we celebrated
a picnic and an artist’s talk with the community of the city.
